“…from turtles one learns to walk”

“my goodness, that viola sure looks big” Poseidon

Here in Turku, this Saturday, at Gallery Titanik, we are having a concert.  It should start at 19:00, and is free of charge.  There will be two solo sets of new works by Marko Timlin and I (Jorge Boehringer or Core of the Coalman, which is probably easier to pronounce but equally awkward to say and to be).  We will be working with Samy Kramer and Jari Souminen (whose other amazing projects are linked to HERE) ‘s new installation of 278 tiny synthesizers, The Spacial Audio Exciter to create new electro-acoustic comprovisations in the gallery space.  The installation is beyond the capability of myself, or a cat, to photograph well in the space, but some poor quality, blurry photos are below.  You can read about the installation here: http://www.titanik.fi/.

More information, in a variety of Mother’s Tongues, plus the source code from the installation in case you are bent in that direction:

Titanik-galleriassa par’aikaan pidettävän näyttelyn aikana järjestetään sarja konsertteja, joissa vierailevat taiteilijat esittävät näytteillä olevalle Samy Kramerin ja Jari Suomisen ääni-installaatiolle sävellettyjä teoksia. Installaatio on yli neljäkymmentä metriä pitkä, lähemmäs kolmattasataa äänilähdettä sisältävä veistos, joka risteilee läpi Titanik-gallerian huoneiden. Veistos on käytännössä soitin, jonka toimintaa voi ohjata tietokoneella.

Sarjan toisessa konsertissa lauantaina 12.7. klo 19:00 esiintyvät suomalais-saksalainen äänitaiteilija Marko Timlin, sekä Core of the Coalman -nimen takana työskentelevä yhdysvaltalainen säveltäjä/muusikko/äänitaiteilija Jorge Boehringer. Boehringer on parhaillaan residenssissä Titanikissa. Taiteilijat työskentelevät teostensa parissa kuluvan viikon aikana gallerialla.

Marko Timlin is a sound artist, composer, musician and inventor of virtual and analogue instruments. During the last years he has developed his main musical and artistic objective: the intuitive improvisation and interaction with new electronic media to create his own unconventional sound adventures and contemporary electronica that is challenging the ears and the mind. His music demonstrates a perfect balance between order and chaos. Timlin freely breaks the boundaries of composition and improvisation in his non-contradicting mix of organized parts and completely messed up blasts of sound. While playing live in concert the creation of his music happens in real-time and, therefore, is as surprising for the audience as it is for the performing artist himself. He regularly performs all over Europe and North America including performances at “Mal au Pixel”, Paris, “E:vent Gallery” London, “Whitebox Gallery” New York, “Digital Media Festival”, Valencia, “La-bas biennale” Helsinki, “L’envers”, Montreal.

Jorge Boehringer’s solo project, Core of the Coalman(US/CZ), is an open sketchbook, characterized as continuity and discontinuity for viola, voice, and circuits on the border between order and chaos, in constant flux. Sonically diverse and at times explosive in texture, Core of the Coalman emphasizes the physicality of sound in its synesthetic relationships between ear, mind, and environment, with the aim of hearing oneself hearing. Performances normally include conventional instruments such as viola and harmonica, as well as feedback-driven yodel triggers, descending tympanic pressures implying warm-bodied interface, and extended upwardly-mobile Carnasitic arrays, with ornaments.
